PMEGP Subsidy Calculation: How Much Can You Get?

The exact subsidy percentage depends on three factors most applicants don't realise stack together — location, category, and beneficiary status all move the number simultaneously.

Executive Summary

  • Three factors determine your rate: location (urban/rural), category, and beneficiary status
  • Rates range from 15% to 35% of project cost
  • Rural location and special category status both increase the subsidy rate
  • Subsidy is calculated on project cost within PMEGP's ceiling, not the full loan if it exceeds the ceiling

The Three Factors That Determine Your Rate

PMEGP subsidy rate depends on the combination of three factors: whether the unit is located in an urban or rural area, the applicant's general or special category status (general, SC/ST, women, ex-servicemen, persons with disability, among others), and which of these categories the applicant falls into determines the specific percentage applied to eligible project cost.

Subsidy Rates by Category

CategoryUrbanRural
General Category15%25%
Special Category (SC/ST/Women/Ex-servicemen/PwD/NER)25%35%

Rates are indicative and subject to scheme guideline updates. Confirm current rates with your district DIC office before finalising project planning.

"A special category applicant in a rural Karnataka location can receive more than double the subsidy rate of a general category applicant in an urban one — the combination of factors matters as much as any single one."

A Worked Example

Consider a manufacturing project with ₹30 Lakh project cost, set up by a woman entrepreneur in a rural Karnataka location. As a special category applicant in a rural area, the applicable subsidy rate is 35% — yielding ₹10.5 Lakh in margin money subsidy, with the balance financed as a bank loan after accounting for the entrepreneur's own contribution (typically a small percentage of project cost beyond what subsidy and loan cover).

How the Project Cost Ceiling Interacts With Subsidy

Subsidy is calculated only on project cost up to PMEGP's ceiling — ₹50 Lakh for manufacturing, ₹20 Lakh for services, as covered in our PMEGP scheme overview. A project costing more than the ceiling can still proceed, but the excess above the ceiling does not receive subsidy and must be financed entirely through the bank loan portion.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is PMEGP subsidy calculated on my project cost?

PMEGP subsidy is calculated as a percentage of eligible project cost, capped at the scheme ceiling (₹50 Lakh for manufacturing, ₹20 Lakh for services). Your applicable rate depends on category and location. Example: a general category applicant in urban Karnataka with ₹40 Lakh project cost receives 15% = ₹6 Lakh subsidy. A special category applicant in rural Karnataka with the same project cost receives 35% = ₹14 Lakh subsidy — more than double.

Is PMEGP subsidy taxable income?

PMEGP margin money subsidy is generally treated as a capital receipt rather than revenue income under Indian income tax provisions, but specific tax treatment should be confirmed with a Chartered Accountant based on current Income Tax Act provisions and applicable circulars. The tax treatment is distinct from the scheme benefit itself and does not affect subsidy eligibility.

Can a PMEGP project cost exceed the ₹50 Lakh ceiling?

Yes. A project can cost more than PMEGP's ₹50 Lakh manufacturing ceiling, but subsidy is calculated only on the eligible amount up to the ceiling. The cost above the ceiling is financed entirely through the bank term loan without subsidy benefit. An MSME loan consultant can help structure the project cost and financing plan to optimise the subsidy entitlement within the scheme parameters.
